Meet Sarah Andrew
The Alaska Job Corps Center in Palmer provides students ages 16 to 24 with career and technical education and training. Sarah Andrew completed her Job Corps work-based training through the BLM Student Training and Employment Program in 2010. She remains employed at the BLM Anchorage Field Office where she assists with cost accounting and correspondence while attending the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The following profile was posted in 2009 shortly after Sarah joined the BLM.
Please tell us where you’re from:
My name is Sarah Andrew I am from a village called Manokotak, in the Bristol Bay area.
Why did you participate in Alaska Job Corps training?
I was inspired after visiting my brother, who is a Job Corps alumnus.
Which Job Corps training program did you participate in?
I participated in the Alaska Job Corps Business Technology Program, training in the Finance (accounting) Field.
Why that program?
I chose Finance because I want to work in a fast-paced environment. I received certificates in Microsoft Office Specialist and Accounting.
Why did you want to do your work-based training at the BLM?
Because it sounded and looked like a GREAT opportunity to be a part of this program. BLM is a great place to work, not just in Alaska but for Alaska. Working with BLM really opens my eyes to how it’s going to be when I get a job.
What will you do with your training when you complete the Job Corps program?
I would love to work in an area very much like BLM. I want to work both with business and accounting because I have studied and I want to learn more.
Please describe your work ethic:
My pride is committing to complete any task or project that is given to me, large or small. I am very organized, detail-oriented, on time, and flexible when needed. I am responsible and reliable in my work.
When not working or training, what do you do like to do?
I love to hang out with friends, and play basketball or volleyball. I also plan to take online classes soon.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with others about yourself?
I would like to thank everyone at Job Corps, especially Luanne Cross and Patricia Giese, for giving me a great place to work for a couple of months. And to all the BLM employees, especially Robbie Swann, thank you for everything!
